We walked into Terry’s at about 7:10. The Chronicle says it closes at 9—lies! It closes at 7. So early! Nonetheless, the friendly counter worker gave us late folk the last 5 wings (for the price of 3), and we also ordered a piece of fish and fries. The whole thing was $7. Pretty sweet.

The chicken, while obviously not cooked to order (because we walked in so late), still boasted tasty, traditionally flavored batter and tender meat. The fish was cooked to order, and it was piping hot and crispy-crusted; I assume that same excellence abets the chicken before overtime hours. The fries were alright—better and thicker than fast food fries, but not quite up to par with standard casual dining fries.

Southeast Airport Boulevard isn’t a fun area; in fact, it’s pretty empty, secluded and uglified by 70’s apartment complexes.

Terry’s breaks that brown-tan clutter with its endearingly vibrant, wooden cigar-smoking catfish posts that decorate each parking spot. The same cartoons adorn the interior as murals. The indoor dining area is pretty tiny—there’s about twenty seats in all. There’s plenty of picnic tables outside, though, if you want to chomp on some fried goodness and watch the sun set over Airport.

We’ll have to go again, sample the other chicken pieces and repost, but for now, I’ll just say it’s worth going—if you can get there on time after work.

After reading your site, I took my daughter and a friend to Terry’s this past Friday. I would definitely give it a good chicken rating (maybe 4 drugsticks out of 5). I ordered the 2 wings and catfish filet for $5.99. Both were nicely breaded with really good flavor. If I were in the area and wanted some good fried chicken, Terry’s would be the place to stop. (I live in Northwest and drove quite a ways to get there, but I wanted to check the place out so I didn’t mind.)
If I’m downtown and want chicken, now I know I can swing by for a stop at Terry’s.
I want to warn people that the interior decor is plain (formica counter type dining on bar stools) but don’t let that put you off. The food is good. There was a couple in there eating when we arrived and I overheard them saying how good everything tasted.
My daughter ordered the popcorn shrimp with fries and hush puppies and basically picked over it: too much breading and not enough shrimp. Also, they give you a lot of fries. Next time I might ask what substitutes there are for the fries. The cole slaw in a cup that came with the shrimp: hated it. Seems like it was way past its prime. Don’t know how long it had been in the fridge, but it wasn’t good. The roll that came with was just so-so. None of us ate the rolls.
But it really is all about the chicken. When I ordered I asked if it was a freshly fried batch and they said it was. It was still steaming hot when we pulled it out of the bag.
